Gangneung is the east coast city best known for its beaches, sunrise at Jeongdongjin, and its coffee street. The city publishes an official English tourist map, and if you’re planning a day trip by KTX from Seoul or a weekend by the sea, it’s worth having.
I went through the whole map myself. It’s a large two-sided map, and there’s much more on it than the beaches. Below is what’s inside and where to get it.
What’s Inside the Gangneung Tourist Map
Front side
- Full map of Gangneung, from Jumunjin in the north to Jeongdongjin in the south
- Transportation info — KTX, express and intercity buses, city bus, Yangyang Airport, taxis
- Four tourist information centers (bus terminal, Gangneung Station, Gyeongpo, Jumunjin)
- Emergency medical centers
Back side
- Three detail maps: Jumunjin, Jeongdongjin, and Downtown & Gyeongpo
- 10 main attractions, including BTS Bus Stop, Gyeongpo Lake, Wolhwa Street and the Jeongdongjin Railbike
- Three theme tour courses
- 9 local foods — soft tofu, potato ball soup, coffee and more
- Main festivals: Gyeongpo Cherry Blossom Festival (April), Gangneung Danoje (June), Gyeongpo Summer Festival (August), Coffee Festival (October)
- Museums and galleries with hours and phone numbers
Personally, I think the Downtown & Gyeongpo detail map is the most useful page. Most visitors spend their time between Gangneung Station, the old downtown, Gyeongpo Lake and Anmok coffee street, and that map covers all of it.
The Three Detail Maps
Jumunjin
The fish market, the harbor, and the BTS Bus Stop at Hyangho Beach. Good if you love seafood or K-pop spots.
Jeongdongjin
The famous sunrise station by the sea, the railbike, and the Badabuchae-gil coastal trail.
Downtown & Gyeongpo
Gangneung Station, Wolhwa Street, Ojukheon, Gyeongpo Lake and Beach, and Anmok coffee street.
How to View and Download the Gangneung Tourist Map
The map is on the Tourguide E-book page of Visit Gangneung, the city’s official tourism website. Find Gangneung Tourist Map on the list and tap PDF Download. Most of the other titles on the list are in Korean, but the English map is labeled in English.
Before you download
The PDF is large and the text is small. Check it on a PC or tablet before your trip if you can. Free paper maps are also available at tourist information centers, including the one at Gangneung Station.
If the link doesn’t work
Korean public websites often change their addresses when they’re redesigned. If the link above doesn’t work, please leave a comment below and I’ll find the new one and update this post.
My Tip for Using the Map
Gangneung is spread out along the coast. Don’t try to see Jumunjin, Gyeongpo and Jeongdongjin all in one day. Pick one or two areas from the detail maps and you’ll enjoy it much more.
